Solar Eclipse Event
Calvary Christian School recognizes the significant learning opportunity that will result from the solar eclipse on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st and we are excited to be able to share the event together as a school. To that end, we will make the following adjustments to our schedule (see below). As with any change in routine, we thank you in advance for your caution and for your patience with fellow drivers.
Attached you will find a permission slip for the August 21st “Eclipse Field Trip” for 4th-12th graders. Although we are not going off-campus, we are treating this as a field trip and must have a printed, signed form for each student who participates. Please make sure your child has turned this completed form into the appropriate office by 8:15 a.m. on Monday morning. Students will not be allowed outside to observe without this signed form.
If you wish to check your children out of school so that they may enjoy the event with you, you are of course welcome to do so. Students who do not have a signed permission form will be able to observe the eclipse inside on TV through a feed from NASA.
For those who have a permission slip, CCS has purchased NASA recommended glasses and will provide these to students on the day of the eclipse. Teachers involved at each grade level will announce to their students when to proceed outside. The height effect of the eclipse will be approximately 2:35 p.m. – 2:40 p.m. Teachers will take their students back to the classroom before dismissal.
Please note the following:
1. The back driveway will be closed off to traffic from 2-3 p.m. Extended Care parents who must pick up between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., will need to park in the main lot and walk to the Preschool/Extended Care offices through the Elementary office entrance.
2. Dismissal will be delayed 15 minutes on Monday:
a. 1st and 2nd grade = Begin dismissal at 3:00 p.m.
b. Grades 3, 4, 5 = Begin dismissal at 3:15 p.m.
c. Upper School = Begin dismissal at 3:30 p.m.
i. MS carpools: keep in mind traffic will be heavier than usual on campus that afternoon; you may want to wait a little longer than normal to get in line on Wilhite Way to enter the back drive.
ii. Students who have a 7th period class will be held until 3:30 p.m. to minimize traffic in the parking lot.
iii. Seniors who do not have a 7th period class will be dismissed after 6th period.
3. Extended Care through 3rd grade will not be outside looking directly at the eclipse. We will have video feeds from NASA on the TV’s in the classrooms.
a. If you wish to have your PS-3rd grade student experience the eclipse, we encourage you to come to the office, sign your children out, and bring them with you outside. You will need to bring glasses with you as we have not ordered glasses for the PS-3rd grades.
4. Fourth Grade Through Twelfth Grade will need a permission slip (see attached) to be released to go outside for the event.
Again, we thank you for your patience and flexibility on this day. We also encourage all to use extra caution driving that day.
