Calvary Christian School’s fifth grade has been studying Ancient China in social studies this quarter. Students have learned about the culture of China, major Chinese dynasties and their accomplishments, Chinese inventions, and festivals celebrated in China. Students also learned about the Chinese New Year traditions and finished this unit with their own version of the New Year. Students designed and built all of the props used for their parade including the lions and dragons. Lion dancers (acrobats) created their own routines and performed in front of the other students. The parade started in the fifth-grade hall with drummers leading the way and continued throughout the elementary building into the gym. Students from other elementary classes lined the pathway and “fed” the lions as they passed by. Once in the gym, students rotated to several stations to practice Chinese writing, make lanterns and fans, answer riddles, enjoy Chinese food, and play games.
