FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, APRIL 9, 2018–Steve Smith, the Head Baseball Coach at Calvary Christian School in Columbus, Georgia, recorded his 100th win Thursday night, April 5, 2018, with a 5-3 win against Lee-Scott Academy. This is a major milestone and is even more impressive considering the amount of time in which the accomplishment has happened. Coach Smith is in his 5th year as Head Coach of the baseball team. When Smith arrived at Calvary, the team had not won a region game in multiple years. Since he took over, the team has won all but two region games and won the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association (GICAA) Region Championship each of his first five years. The fifth region championship was clinched on March 27th with a 15-0 win against Fullington Academy.
We are truly blessed to have Coach Smith here at Calvary and are extremely proud of what he has been able to accomplish in such a short period of time, in leading the young men in Calvary’s baseball program. Over the past couple of years, I have come to know Coach Smith and believe the reason he is successful not only as a coach here at Calvary but as a man his focus in honoring and glorifying our Father with the gifts our Lord has blessed him with. I truly believe what Coach Smith, his staff, and Calvary’s baseball teams have accomplished are only the tip of the iceberg to what they are capable of if they will continue to glorify God in what they do. -Ray Honea, Calvary Athletic Director
As impressive as the 100-39 overall record and 5 straight region championships have been in Smith’s time at Calvary, what is more impressive is the culture that Coach Smith has created. When you look into the culture of Calvary baseball, it looks more like a family than a team. That’s intentional by Smith whose passion is to develop his players’ faith, values, and discipline through the game of baseball. Coach Smith created a Bible study for his players to be involved in and brings in leaders and mentors to grow and challenge his players. Smith has incorporated annual team-wide community service projects to help serve the community and teach his players the importance of serving others. His players absolutely love playing for him and representing Calvary baseball.
Coach Smith leads the entire baseball program at Calvary that consists of a middle school team, junior varsity team, and a varsity team. In his time at Calvary, the overall baseball program has grown by 82%. The varsity team has reached at least the State Semi-finals in each of the four previous years and the State Finals in 2015 which it lost by one run in the deciding championship game. The middle school team won the GICAA State Championship in 2017.
Coach Smith and the team are working hard to make a strong finish this year and compete for a state championship. Calvary Christian School Varsity Baseball will host the first round of the GICAA baseball state playoff April 27-28, 2018 in Columbus, Georgia.
